Albany Leadership is very grateful to the National Grid Foundation for their support of our educational efforts and impact in STEM education among young women of color. The National Grid Foundation awarded us 1,000 dollars for TI-89 Calculators for our math classes. TI-89 calculators are historically one of the most expensive educational tools in K- 12 education that families must provide to support their child’s learning. For economically disadvantaged students the cost of the calculator can hinder a family budget or more. Excluding several young people from the access and the opportunity to succeed in higher-level math classes like Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus which are courses that can help students earn acceptance to and graduate from college.
At Albany Leadership, our mission is rooted in preparing young women for college. We know that girls can learn better especially in math and science within our single-sex school environment. Having the opportunity to provide our students with TI-89 calculators supports our goal of creating a welcoming environment for stronger learning in STEM courses and our mission in preparing our students for the collegiate environment. We are very grateful to the National Grid Foundation for its focus on supporting educational opportunities in K-12 classrooms that can improve quality of life and self-sufficiency.
